Recommended Reading

This is a section I've never seen before, and since I'm trying to be thorough, I felt I should add it. I like to read, a lot, and here are a few books about the Beatles, or even by them, that I liked.

A Day In The Life: The Music and Artistry of the Beatles
 By: Mark Hertsgaard

This book was the first real book about the Beatles that I bought or had bought for me. I thought, at the time, that it was so definative that I dubbed it "The Beatle Bible". Now that I'm a bit older, I don't think it's quite as sacred, but it is a very good read. I liked it very much, since it gave both quotes from the Beatles and the author's own view of things.

The Beatles Anthology
By: The Beatles

The above mentioned book is a behemoth. It is simply huge, there's no other way around it, and I don't think that there is a paperback version coming out. But it's nice; it is written entirely with quotes from the Beatles and their associates. Some of the quotes are just hilarious, and it has plenty of nifty pictures in it that I'd never seen before.

The Beatles: Book Of Lists
By: Stephen J. Spignesi

I'd suggest this book only if you're truely obsessive. It is just what it claims to be- a book full of lists, of everything to do with the Beatles, right down to who-would-star-as-what in a movie rendition of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings. It's nicely complied, and the author has a good sense of humor, but you have to really want a lot of useless information about the Beatles to get it.

Skywriting by Word of Mouth
By: John Lennon

This book, although odd and a bit rambling, captures John's post-Beatles spirirt fully with shorts that he wrote, and little doodles of his. I'm not all the way through it, but I like it already. It has also been the source of plenty of laughs with me and my friends. (It was recently named "The Book with Marijuana pages and LSD print.")

Blackbird Singing
By: Paul McCartney

This is a recent collection of Paul McCartney's poems. It includes some lyrics to well-known Beatles songs, but also poems that have never been released to music (As far as I know). There are a few very touching ones that deal with Linda's death. An absolute must-buy for Macca fans.
